Climate Justice Bridging Project (CJC Bridging Project)

The Climate Justice Bridging Project is a twelve-month transitional initiative (April 2026- March 2027) implemented by OSSEDI Malawi as part of an Oxfam-coordinated eight-partner consortium, designed to secure and sustain the resilience gains achieved under the preceding (2024-2026) Climate Just Communities (CJC) programme. While the broader consortium serves 18,000 households across nine Traditional Authorities in seven districts, OSSEDI leads locally-led adaptation efforts in the climate vulnerable Traditional Authority Ngokwe, Machinga District, and Traditional Authority Ngwelero, Zomba, directly reaching 4,000 participants (60% women, 10% youth, and 5% persons with disabilities.) The project addresses compounded climate shocks including recurrent floods, prolonged droughts, cyclones, and critically low access to safe water. It applies three climate justice pillars i.e distributive, procedural, and transformative through six technical components: Livelihoods Security, Disaster Risk Management, Natural Resources Management, Resilient Schools, WASH, and Loss & Damage, with Gender and Social Inclusion (GESI) and policy advocacy cutting across all of them. Working through Village Natural Resource Management Committees, Village Development Committees, and Village Savings and Loans structures revitalised under the earlier CJC programme, the project aims to strengthen household livelihoods and food security, reduce vulnerability to climate hazards through stronger Disaster Risk Management systems, and increase women's and girls' participation and leadership in climate justice decision-making. The project contributes to Malawi's national climate resilience agenda and its commitments under the Paris Agreement and Sendai Framework.
