Mbaula Za makono Banja La Thanzi (Improved Cookstoves) Project

The “Mbaula Zamakono, Banja la Thanzi” Improved Cookstove (ICS) Project, implemented by OSSEDI Malawi in partnership with Futures Inc. Japan and World Vision, tackles the devastating health, economic, and environmental costs of traditional three‑stone fires in rural Malawi. Under the project, OSSEDI Malawi is operating across three Traditional Authorities of Kayembe, Dzoole and Mponera in Dowa District. The project has successfully installed 35,000 efficient rocket stoves reducing fuel use by 30%-40%, cutting indoor smoke equivalent to smoking two packs of cigarettes a day, and freeing up valuable time for women and children. Every stove is digitally registered with GPS coordinates and unique IDs, laying the groundwork for carbon credits that will make the project financially sustainable and scalable, while directly advancing the wellbeing of children, youth, and women.
